Porsche introduces wireless charging for its innovative electric vehicle lineup
The luxury car manufacturer, Porsche, is set to revolutionise electric vehicle (EV) charging with the introduction of wireless charging technology in their upcoming 2026 Cayenne EV. Scheduled to debut at the end of 2025, this innovative feature will make charging on-the-go a breeze.
Porsche's foray into wireless charging technology marks a significant milestone, as the 2026 Cayenne EV will be the first battery EV to offer this feature. The induction charging unit's receiver is ingeniously located underneath the body of the vehicle, between the front wheels.
The wireless charging system is designed for everyday use, with a maximum charging power of 11kW, which falls within the typical range of Level 2 chargers. The system is designed to be user-friendly, ensuring a seamless charging experience for drivers.
The built-in North American Charging Standard port, coupled with the wireless charging option, means that Porsche customers will have the flexibility to charge their Cayenne EV at Tesla Supercharger stations and other public charging stations, or opt for traditional charging with a wall box.
To initiate wireless charging, drivers simply need to park their car over a separate inductive charging floor plate. A motion detector in the charging floor plate will sense the vehicle, and wireless charging will begin automatically once the EV is in the correct spot and the driver has initiated the parking brake.
The 2026 Cayenne EV's "Surround View" parking function on the infotainment screen can help drivers in reaching the appropriate position for wireless charging. This feature, combined with the wireless charging system, promises to make charging an effortless part of the driving experience.
Porsche customers will have the option to order an inductive charging floor plate for their Cayenne EV, or they can choose to charge traditionally with a wall box. The company plans to roll out wireless charging to other markets around the world following the European launch in 2026.
Michael Steiner, Porsche board member for development, emphasised the importance of ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure for the acceptance of electric mobility. With the introduction of wireless charging technology in the 2026 Cayenne EV, Porsche is undeniably taking a giant step towards making electric mobility more accessible and convenient for its customers.
