Police seek out potential witnesses in relation to an investigation of computer-related fraud
The Duisburg Police are appealing for witnesses to help them in their investigation of a fraud case that occurred between March and September 2024. The suspect, who remains unknown, withdrew several thousand euros from various accounts using multiple forged debit cards.
The fraudulent activities were not limited to Duisburg, but also included other cities such as Essen, Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen, Mettmann, Bochum, Wesel, Dorsten, Neuss, Ratingen, Düsseldorf, Herne, Kassel (Hessen), Braunschweig (Niedersachsen), and Garbsen (Niedersachsen).
The police are particularly interested in any information that could lead to the identification of the suspect. They have asked the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities at ATMs or terminals.
The method used in the fraud is known as "skimming", a form of electronic data theft at ATMs or terminals. To prevent such incidents, the police have provided three tips:
- Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
- Regularly check your bank statements for any unusual transactions.
- Avoid using ATMs that look tampered with or unusual.
