PCIe Flash to Dominate Data Centers by 2018, Oracle Enables Direct Management
Gartner predicts a surge in PCIe flash unit shipments, with nearly half of all SSD units destined for data centers using this technology by 2018. Oracle, the software-defined storage provider, enables direct management and use of Oracle ASM disk groups on the server bus. Enterprises are increasingly adopting flash storage for high-performance applications.
PCIe flash is gaining traction for its ability to accelerate peak application performance and improve lagging performance in combined HDD and flash environments. It's particularly popular for caching configurations in front of existing SANs, reducing latencies to tens of microseconds and adding thousands of IOPs.
In database environments, PCIe flash with caching software can deliver significant performance improvements at a lower cost than SAN-based approaches. Oracle's software-defined storage enables PCIe flash to be accessed and managed as ASM disk groups directly within the Oracle database server. This not only improves server core utilization but also reduces Oracle license fees or extends the life of existing licenses.
Enterprises are also benefiting from PCIe flash in MySQL deployments. Flash clustering software allows for server consolidation, reducing server count by 38% to 70%.
