Over 1 Million Syrians Return Home Since 2024, Despite Challenges

Over 850,000 Syrian migrants have returned to their homeland since December 2024, with the majority coming from Turkey. The UNHCR reports that many Syrians in neighboring countries also express a strong desire to return, despite ongoing challenges.

The UNHCR survey in September 2025 found that 80% of Syrians in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt wish to return home. This follows the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, which has led to an increase in returns. Around 509,387 Syrians have returned to Syria from Turkey, according to Turkish interior minister Ali Yerlikaya. Since 2016, over 1.2 million Syrians have made the journey back from Turkey.

However, many returnees face significant obstacles. Over 7 million Syrians remain displaced within Syria, and 4.5 million live abroad. Many returnees struggle to find adequate housing and must rebuild homes destroyed during the war using their own resources. Unexploded ordnance and landmines pose a major security concern, with nearly 300,000 explosives still scattered across the country.

Despite the challenges, the return of Syrian migrants continues. Over 1 million refugees have returned to Syria since December 2024, with over half from Turkey. The desire to return home remains strong among Syrians, but addressing the ongoing issues will be crucial for their successful reintegration.
