OpenAI's Stargate Project to Revolutionize AI Processing with Massive Memory Demand
OpenAI's ambitious Gemini project is set to revolutionize AI processing, with plans to build massive data centers worldwide. The project requires immense computing power, leading to strategic partnerships with tech giants Samsung and SK hynix for memory supply.
Gemini aims to consume nearly half of global DRAM output, with plans to use 900,000 DRAM wafers monthly, potentially 40% of total DRAM production. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, both South Korean tech corporations, will supply these wafers, cutting and manufacturing the necessary DRAM chips, HBM stacks, and memory modules. The companies have agreed to supply undiced wafers, indicating the vast memory needs of the project.
To meet these demands, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will collaborate with OpenAI to develop innovative floating data centers. Meanwhile, Samsung SDS will provide consulting services and work on data center architecture for the project. The deal is expected to involve various types of memory, including DDR5 and HBM, tailored for AI processors.
OpenAI's Gemini project is poised to significantly impact the global memory market and data center landscape. With strategic partnerships secured, the project is set to consume a substantial portion of global DRAM output, driving innovation in data center technology and AI processing capabilities.
