OpenAI's ChatGPT encountered an outage on June 10: a detailed account of the incident's progression.

The popular AI assistant, ChatGPT, has experienced its longest outage to date on June 10, 2025, leaving users worldwide frustrated due to elevated error rates and partial unavailability. This incident, which lasted more than eight hours, affected not only individual users but also services like the Sora image generator.

The outage, which started shortly before 12am PDT, saw users encountering "Too many concurrent requests" errors and being unable to load ChatGPT and related services. Reports of the issue spiked again at 3am PDT, but gradually decreased throughout the morning.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has been actively investigating the root causes of the outage and working on mitigations. The root cause for the issue has been identified, and recovery has started, although it could take hours to fully restore normal operations.

In a bid to prevent future outages, OpenAI has been taking proactive steps to enhance stability. These include applying targeted mitigations such as bypassing faulty quota checks, closely monitoring system recovery, and preparing detailed Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) to understand failure points and improve system robustness.

This is not the first time ChatGPT has experienced an outage. Previous incidents occurred in December 2024 and June 2024, with the former lasting around four hours and the latter around five hours. However, the current outage marks the longest period of disruption for the AI assistant.

While the outage is not confirmed to be a result of a cyber attack, a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is not yet ruled out. During the outage, users reported that ChatGPT was giving flat, basic answers instead of its usual personality.

Despite the outage, Apple announced its refreshed software platforms during WWDC 2025, which includes new Apple Intelligence features that hand off tasks to ChatGPT. The new software updates won't be available to the masses until later this year, but a developer beta was released yesterday.

As OpenAI continues to work on implementing a mitigation for the issue, users are encouraged to stay updated via the company's status page and community forums. The company remains committed to ensuring faster issue resolution and less user disruption in the future.

The lengthy outage of ChatGPT on June 10, 2025, which affected not only individual users but also services like the Sora image generator, was primarily characterized by "Too many concurrent requests" errors and inability to load the AI assistant. OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI, is currently investigating the general-news worthy incident, focusing on applying targeted mitigations, closely monitoring system recovery, and preparing Root Cause Analyses to prevent future technology-related outages.
