OpenAI Boosts ChatGPT Search, Google & Microsoft Limit Data Access
OpenAI has updated ChatGPT with improved search functionality, while Google has limited data collection at scale. Meanwhile, SISTRIX observes changes in ChatGPT's web search behaviour, and Microsoft retires Bing Search APIs.
OpenAI's September 16 release notes mention enhancements to ChatGPT's search capabilities, though backend sourcing details remain unclear. Meanwhile, Google has restricted the 'num=100' parameter, returning only 10 results per request. This increases the effort needed to gather SERP data at scale, as noted by SISTRIX.
SISTRIX also reports that ChatGPT is using web searches less frequently. In recent daily spot-checks, the share of answers relying on web searches has dropped from over 15% to below 2.5% for users without a registered account. This reduction could be due to Google's measures against large-scale crawling, limiting data access without user authentication.
Microsoft has also announced the retirement of Bing Search APIs on August 11, further shifting the search landscape.
These changes in search functionality and behaviour may impact users and developers alike. OpenAI's ChatGPT improvements could enhance user experience, while Google's and Microsoft's moves may affect data collection and integration for third-party services.
