Opel's 'Green Campus' Initiative Harnesses Solar Power for Sustainable Production
Opel is transforming its headquarters in Ruesselsheim into an 'infinite campus', harnessing solar power from a vast photovoltaic installation. The project, part of Stellantis' climate-friendly initiative, is one of several similar undertakings in Europe.
The Ruesselsheim campus is equipped with a 7-kilometer cable, laid using an eco-friendly drilling method that minimises impact on nature and roads. In Eisenach, Opel's plant will draw power from a photovoltaic installation developed by Athos Solar in Krauthausen. This installation, completed in just five months, spans 21 hectares and comprises around 32,300 solar modules.
SOLARWATT GmbH, a leading German manufacturer of photovoltaic and battery storage systems, played a significant role in this project. By spring 2025, the company aims to hold the largest market share in revenue from these systems in Germany. Opel views this model as a reliable, long-term, and eco-friendly power source that eases strain on the public grid. Athos Solar has signed a Direct Wire PPA with Opel, expecting an annual yield of 19 gigawatt-hours.
Opel's commitment to sustainability is evident in its 'infinite campus' initiative. By harnessing solar power, the company aims to make its production sites climate-friendly, starting with the Opel plant in Eisenach. This move not only benefits the environment but also ensures a calculable and eco-friendly power source for the company's operations.
