Opel Partners with Athos Solar for Renewable Energy in Eisenach Plant

Opel has partnered with Athos Solar to power its Eisenach plant with solar energy. A 7km cable, laid using an eco-friendly drilling method, connects the plant to a 19.6MW solar plant in Krauthausen. The solar plant covers 21 hectares and has around 32,300 solar modules.

Opel views this model as a long-term, calculable, and eco-friendly power source that relieves the public grid. Athos Solar and Opel have signed a Direct Wire PPA for the plant's annual yield of 19 gigawatt-hours.

The company IBC SOLAR appointed a new CEO, Julius Möhrstedt, in 2025 amid intense price competition and oversupply in the residential photovoltaic systems market. Möhrstedt aims to drive innovation and sustainability in the sector.

A 'green campus' is being created at the Opel headquarters in Ruesselsheim, with integrated solar systems for power. Stellantis, the parent company of Opel, aims to make its production sites climate-friendly, including the Opel plant in Eisenach.

The partnership between Opel and Athos Solar marks a significant step towards sustainable energy use in automotive production. The 19.6MW solar plant will directly power the Opel plant in Eisenach, reducing its reliance on the public grid. Stellantis' commitment to creating 'green campuses' further demonstrates its dedication to climate-friendly production.
