Offshore substation at Dieppe Le Treport, installed by DEME
The installation of the 496 MW Dieppe Le Tréport offshore wind farm's electrical substation has been accomplished off the coast of Dieppe and Le Tréport, France, marking a significant milestone in the country's offshore wind development.
The substation, designed and built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at its Saint-Nazaire shipyard in France, collects electricity from the wind farm’s 62 turbines and transmits it to the national grid. The installation was carried out by DEME using its installation vessel, Gulliver, approximately 15 kilometers offshore near Dieppe and Le Tréport.
This key milestone for the EMDT project, led by Ocean Winds (OW), a 50-50 joint venture by EDP Renewables and ENGIE, was achieved in collaboration with French and European industry partners, furthering the country’s offshore wind ambitions.
Navantia (Spain) supplied the steel jacket foundation for the substation, while Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE) developed the grid connection infrastructure to transfer power from the substation to shore. Sumitomo Corporation and Banque des Territoires are also shareholders in the project.
The exact height and weight of the substation are not specified in the available sources, but offshore substations typically feature large steel jacket foundations and heavy topside modules, reflecting substantial scale and mass.
Marc Hirt, Ocean Winds' Country Manager for France, stated that the installation of the Dieppe - Le Tréport offshore substation is a significant milestone for the company. Frédéric Grizaud, Director of the Marine Energies Business Unit at Chantiers de l'Atlantique, added that the installation marks the end of 24 months of construction of the Dieppe-Le Tréport topside at their Saint-Nazaire site.
The successful installation is another demonstration of momentum in France's offshore wind sector. Chantiers de l'Atlantique continues to strengthen its position as a key player in marine renewable energy in Europe with this project.
