NIST Proposes Security Overlays for AI Systems to Reduce Cyber Risks

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has proposed a concept paper and action plan for developing specialized security overlays for Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. The initiative, titled 'Control Overlays for AI Systems', aims to reduce cybersecurity risks in AI development and use.

The paper outlines several use cases for the security overlays, including generative and predictive AI, single and multi-agent systems, and specific control mechanisms for AI developers. NIST has set up a public Slack channel, 'NIST Overlays for Securing AI', for interested parties to track progress, provide feedback, and contribute to the development process. The institute invites experts and organizations to offer feedback on the concept and action plan to ensure the planned security measures address the diverse risks of modern AI systems. The goal is to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and users, based on the established NIST Standard Special Publication 800-53.

The 'Control Overlays for Securing AI Systems' (COSAiS) project will develop a series of overlays to secure AI systems using the NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-53 Controls, along with other NIST publications. The project will focus on addressing use cases with different types of AI systems and specific AI system components.
