Nissan Retires Iconic GT-R R35 After 18-Year Run

Nissan has officially retired the iconic GT-R R35, marking the end of an 18-year era for the legendary sports car. The decision comes as the automaker looks towards the future, with evolving regulations and competition driving the need for change.

The GT-R R35's power grew significantly over its lifespan, from 353kW in early models to a peak of 447kW in the 2023 Nismo variant. Special editions like the T-Spec Takumi and Skyline trims bid farewell to the model in North America. Nissan ceased taking orders for the GT-R R35 in Japan on February 28, 2025, with the 2025 model year set to be its last.

The Hyper Force Concept offers a glimpse into the future of the GT-R lineage. It hints at a fully electric successor, powered by Nissan's solid-state battery technology. However, production readiness is not expected until 2028. Meanwhile, speculation persists about a hybridized GT-R as a transitional model before the full electric shift.

The retirement of the GT-R R35 is a significant moment for Nissan and automotive enthusiasts alike. While the future of the GT-R is uncertain, the Hyper Force Concept suggests an exciting, electric-powered direction. Nissan's exploration of electric and hybrid options for future models keeps the door open for a electrified successor to the legendary GT-R.
