Nigeria Launches E-Invoicing Solution to Boost Tax Compliance

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has rolled out a new electronic invoicing solution, aiming to streamline tax compliance and modernise Nigeria's tax administration. The system, which went live on August 1, 2025, aligns with global best practices and supports the government's objectives of enhancing revenue assurance and reducing tax evasion.

The e-invoicing solution, an electronic fiscal system (EFS), provides real-time visibility into commercial transactions. It was launched following a successful pilot phase that began in November 2024, ensuring system stability and addressing technical issues. Large taxpayers, companies with an annual turnover of five billion Naira and above, were the first to be onboarded onto the platform. Service providers were incorporated to facilitate taxpayer onboarding, integration, and invoice transmission processes.

The new system has been well-received, with over 1,000 companies, representing 20% of over 5,000 eligible firms, embracing the solution within the first two weeks of its launch. MTN Nigeria made history by becoming the first taxpayer to transmit live electronic invoices to the FIRS, officially marking the start of the e-invoicing regime.

The FIRS has extended the deadline for large taxpayers to November 1, 2025, due to operational constraints faced by some taxpayers. The e-invoicing solution is expected to make tax compliance faster, easier, and more transparent, ultimately enhancing Nigeria's tax revenue and administration.
