In a career spanning decades, Jim Lovell, a NASA astronaut, made history with his remarkable space missions. Before commanding the Apollo 13 mission in 1970, Lovell's notable achievement was serving as the command module pilot and navigator on Apollo 8 in December 1968[1][3][5]. This mission was the first crewed mission to leave Earth orbit and successfully travel to lunar orbit and back, marking a critical milestone in the space race[3].

Lovell's role was key to the mission’s success. Prior to Apollo 8, he also flew on Gemini 7 and Gemini 12 missions. Gemini 7, in December 1965, tested the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body, while Gemini 12, in November 1966, completed a four-day Earth-orbit mission aiming to prove important spaceflight techniques needed for later Apollo missions[1][2][5].

With these missions under his belt, Lovell had already become an experienced astronaut, making him a strong candidate to command Apollo 13[1][5].

Meanwhile, another historic moment occurred during Apollo 8. Bill Anders, the Lunar Module Pilot, probably took the first full-disk image of Earth from space[4]. This iconic Earthrise image became a symbol of the fragility and beauty of our planet. Sadly, Anders passed away last year in a plane crash.

Fast forward to today, and the space industry continues to evolve. A massive online trove of Popular Mechanics issues dating back to 1902 has been discovered[6]. Every issue through the end of 2005 is included and free to browse. The magazine's tagline, "Written so that you can understand it," first appeared on the masthead on issue 6.

As for current events, the HOPE_16 conference is just around the corner. Kody Kinzie will be presenting a talk titled "Spooky Action at a Discount." For updates on talks to cover from HOPE_16, contact tips@our website[7].

On a different note, the Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project, a massive dam project in Colorado, is nearing completion. The dam will be 350 feet tall and over 1,000 feet wide upon completion. What makes this dam unique is its asphalt core, which is somewhat unusual for earthen dams[8]. Aaron Witt, who first checked out the project in 2023, focuses his coverage on the civil engineering aspects[9].

Finally, we remember Jim Lovell, who passed away at the age of 97. He racked up four flights, making him the first person to reach that number[10]. Only five astronauts from the Apollo program are left, and all are in their 90s.

Science and technology played significant roles in Jim Lovell's career, with his expertise in environmental-science and space-and-astronomy leading to his successful command of the Apollo 13 mission in 1970. Today, the space industry continues to grow, with archives like the Popular Mechanics magazine offering valuable insights into past achievements and future developments.
