Newcastle City Council teams up with Purple to offer city-wide public Wi-Fi services.

In a pioneering initiative, the Newcastle City Council has joined forces with Purple, a global leader in digital connectivity, to transform free Wi-Fi into a potent marketing tool for business growth. This move aims to ensure no resident is left behind in the digital age and foster a fair, connected city.

The partnership, encompassing council buildings, gyms, libraries, commercial buildings, and public spaces, will deliver a city-wide Wi-Fi network for residents, students, and visitors. Purple's platform empowers businesses to build stronger relationships with their customers by enhancing existing infrastructure investment, with over two million daily users worldwide.

To commemorate the launch, Purple will host a city-wide digital 'Egg Hunt'. Five eggs, each worth £1,000, will be hidden across the city. To claim these rewards, users need to join a Wi-Fi network via the Purple ConneX App or add a new venue to the network. This innovative approach will drive awareness of the app and encourage engagement with the city's digital infrastructure.

Purple is giving away £120,000 of free Wi-Fi hardware and licenses to 1,000 small and medium-sized businesses. This initiative equips local businesses with location analytics and customer insights, arming them with digital intelligence to attract more customers and compete in a tough market.

Cllr Paul Frew, a city councillor, stated that the partnership aims to combat digital poverty and provide free access to Wi-Fi in more places for Newcastle residents. He further added that this initiative is a significant stride towards ensuring Newcastle remains at the forefront of technological innovation and digital connectivity.

Gavin Wheeldon, the CEO of Purple, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating that it equips local businesses with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age. He believes that this partnership will empower businesses to attract more customers and compete effectively in a rapidly evolving market.

Newcastle, home to more than 53,000 businesses, including one of the fastest-growing SME sectors in the UK, stands to benefit significantly from this partnership. Users will be able to roam freely across hundreds of hotspots without repeated logins, making it easier than ever to stay connected while on the move.

This partnership between the Newcastle City Council and Purple is set to revolutionise the city's digital landscape, turning free Wi-Fi into a valuable marketing tool and a step towards a fair, connected city.
