Nestlé Exits Methane Alliance, Sparking Questions on Cross-Industry Climate Efforts

Nestlé, the world's largest food manufacturer, has withdrawn from the Methane Alliance, a cross-industry initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The move, announced in October 2025, has not significantly impacted the company's stock, which has seen a decrease of over 15% from its May 2024 peak. Despite leaving the alliance, Nestlé has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions like methane from its supply chain.

Nestlé's exit from the Methane Alliance is seen as a setback for collaborative efforts to combat climate change. The alliance, launched in December 2023 by the Environmental Defense Fund, brought together major companies including Nestlé, Danone, Kraft Heinz, and Starbucks. These companies agreed to measure, disclose, and reduce methane emissions from their dairy supply chains. Nestlé's departure comes after it had already achieved a significant reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions, cutting them by 21% from 2018 to the end of 2024.

In a statement, Nestlé explained that it regularly reviews its memberships in external organizations and decided to end its participation in the Methane Alliance as part of this process. The company emphasized that it remains committed to its own climate targets, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions such as methane from its supply chain.

Nestlé's stock has remained relatively stable despite its exit from the Methane Alliance. The company's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is unchanged, with a 21% reduction achieved since 2018. However, the withdrawal has raised questions about the future of cross-industry collaborations aimed at combating climate change.
