Munster's Battery Cell Research Set for Massive Expansion
Munster is set to expand its battery cell research capabilities with the second phase of the Battery Cell Research Factory (BCRF). The Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS is leading this project, which is significantly larger than the initial 6,000 square meter facility. The BCRF is a key part of the 'BatteryCityMunster' research hub, backed by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space with up to 500 million euros.
The BCRF Prefab, operational since 2024, has already housed over 140 Fraunhofer Society employees working on a model line for battery cell production. The upcoming BCRF Fab, scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, will span 20,000 square meters. This expansion aims to develop and produce batteries sustainably and efficiently on an industrial scale, catering to industries like the automotive sector, energy, robotics, and aerospace. The state of NRW is investing around 320 million euros in land and buildings for this project. Munster's bid to host the BCRF was successful in 2019.
The completion of the BCRF Fab in late 2027 is expected to bring a unique battery production facility to Munster. This expansion, supported by substantial federal and state funding, underscores Munster's commitment to advancing battery technology and its role as a key player in the European battery industry.
