Mönchengladbach Airport Expansion: Harness Racing Track Lease Terminated

The Development Corporation of the City of Mönchengladbach (EWMG) has terminated the lease agreement for the harness racing track, effective 31.12.21. This move paves the way for the development of Mönchengladbach Airport, which EWMG took over in mid-2018 to boost the local economy.

The terminated lease initiates the building development procedure. Concrete expansion is expected to begin in 2022, transforming the 140,000 m2 area into a hub for maintenance operations, research and development, flight school traffic, business aviation, and similar activities. A part of the area will serve as a retention space for flood protection, giving the airport its own 'green' face.

The plans also include creating a new business center and further halls with direct access to the flight field. Approximately 40,000 m2 of gross floor space for offices and 25,000 m2 of hall space for flight-related companies can be realized on the harness racing track area. This offers great strategic options for the overall development of the airport.

The termination of the lease agreement marks a significant step towards the economic development of Mönchengladbach Airport. The plans aim to create a diverse and sustainable hub for various aviation-related activities, contributing to the city's growth and prosperity. Despite these developments, restarting international scheduled flights is not part of the plan.
