Modifying genius at work: A hobbyist reinvents the Lenovo Legion Go portable gaming device into a full-fledged laptop, showcasing an impressive upgrade

In an exciting development for gaming enthusiasts, a modder named MysteriousAlarm897 has transformed the Lenovo Legion Go into a mini laptop with a 3D-printed frame and additional hardware. This redesigned handheld was first published in 2025.

The Lenovo Legion Go was initially launched in 2023, entering the market to compete with gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally. Now, with this mod, the Legion Go can be used for work or play, as it runs Windows 11.

The modded Legion Go features a unique design, with the controllers removed and a small kickstand deployed, making it a mini PC. This transformation was made possible by a slimmer version of the modded Lenovo Legion Go, also created by MysteriousAlarm897, which does not include the extra battery.

The modded Legion Go boasts several upgrades, including dual USB-C and dual USB-A ports, a full keyboard, and quick-remove clasps for easy in and out. It also comes equipped with a 190Wh battery, nearly four times the capacity of the built-in 49Wh battery.

The Legion Go 2, the official successor to the Lenovo Legion Go, was launched at IFA 2025. This new model can be compared to the ROG Xbox Ally X in our ROG Xbox Ally X vs. Lenovo Legion Go 2 comparison.

The Legion Go 2 is packed with impressive specs, supporting variable refresh rate (VRR) and boasting a 144Hz refresh rate. It can be equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, up to 32GB of LPDDR5x-8000 RAM, and up to a 2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

However, the Legion Go 2 has made a few compromises compared to its predecessor. For instance, its display now uses an OLED panel for improved color and contrast, but its resolution has been reduced to 1920x1200 (FHD+) from the Go's 2560x1600 (QHD+).

Despite these changes, the Legion Go 2 is poised to compete with the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X. As always, we'll keep you updated on the latest developments in the world of gaming handhelds.
