A five-day manhunt ended on December 9, 2024, with the arrest of Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Mangione was apprehended while dining at a McDonald's restaurant, following the murder of Brian Thompson in Manhattan. The arrest led to a wave of manipulated reviews targeting McDonald's on Google, which were subsequently removed.

Mangione, the prime suspect in Thompson's murder, fled the scene on a bicycle through Central Park. He managed to escape the city in a taxi before police could apprehend him. Five days later, local police in Altoona arrested him while he was eating at a McDonald's restaurant. The arrest triggered a surge of negative reviews on Google, with users leaving fake, derogatory comments about the fast-food chain. This practice, known as 'review-bombing', violates Google's guidelines, which require genuine experiences and prohibit manipulated reviews, especially from multiple accounts. Google swiftly removed the manipulated reviews following Mangione's arrest.
