LockBit Claims Massive Federal Reserve Breach, U.S. Justice Department Strikes Back
Ransomware group LockBit has claimed to have breached the Federal Reserve, stealing a massive 33 terabytes of sensitive data. The group alleges to possess information on millions of Americans' bank transfers with U.S. banks and PNC Bank. However, the U.S. Department of Justice recently struck a blow against LockBit, disrupting their operations and filing charges.
LockBit's claims have been met with skepticism. So far, released data indicates a breach of a single bank, Evolve Bank & Trust, not the Federal Reserve. Evolve Bank & Trust is currently investigating the incident and has involved law enforcement. The Federal Reserve has not confirmed any breach.
The group initially demanded a serious offer by June 25. After the deadline, LockBit released parts of the stolen data on the darknet via 21 links. Some experts suggest this could be an act of desperation by LockBit following the Justice Department's actions.
The alleged hack of the Federal Reserve remains unconfirmed. LockBit's claims may be an attempt to gain influence in the darknet. The U.S. Department of Justice continues to combat ransomware groups. The investigation into the breach of Evolve Bank & Trust is ongoing.
