Local PBS affiliate in Reno, Nevada, partners with Sinclair Broadcast Group to launch a new digital channel using the advanced ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard.

PBS Reno and Sinclair Broadcast Group have partnered to launch a new virtual ATSC 3.0 channel, KNPB-VC. This development marks another way PBS Reno is expanding its service to the region, as well as the third such launch in the nation under the arrangement between Sinclair and the American Public Television System (APTS).

KNPB-VC is broadcasting on virtual channel 5-11 and can be found in viewers' Electronic Program Guide (EPG) of their NextGen TVs. Viewers in PBS Reno's 75,000 square mile coverage area will now be able to utilize ATSC 3.0 to enhance their viewing experience.

The new channel brings PBS Reno's programming into the NextGen TV era, offering a state-of-the-art experience. Key features of ATSC 3.0 channels often include significantly improved picture quality, potentially with Advanced HDR technology. In the case of KNPB-VC, it is expected to feature Advanced HDR by Technicolor, which provides richer color, deeper contrast, and better brightness levels.

Additional features generally enabled by ATSC 3.0 include 4K UHD resolution, improved reception robustness, advanced emergency alerting, and interactive services. The Advanced HDR by Technicolor typically boosts the visual experience by supporting a wider color gamut and higher luminance than standard HD or typical HDR formats.

While precise details about KNPB-VC’s launch and features are not yet available, these expectations reflect the state-of-the-art for such a channel according to industry standards for ATSC 3.0 launches by PBS and Sinclair Broadcast Group.

The actual programming on KNPB-VC is streamed to NextGen TVs via the internet, with bits transmitted over the air via 3.0 inserting the EPG programming data. Kurt Mische, president and CEO of PBS Reno, expressed pleasure about partnering with Sinclair to make ATSC 3.0 available in their region.

More information about this development can be found on the PBS Reno website. Viewers can find KNPB-VC in their EPG and enjoy a superior viewing experience with the new virtual channel.
