Life devoid of gambling experiences
Growing Popularity of Video Games in Germany
A recent survey conducted by the Bitkom association reveals a thriving gaming industry in Germany, with more than half of the population playing video or computer games at least occasionally [1][4]. The survey, which polled 1,209 individuals aged 16 and over, including 626 gamers, was carried out from mid-May to early June in 2023.
According to the survey, the importance of computer and video games is growing year by year. The percentage of gamers in Germany remains stable at 52%, with a slight increase in the average age of gamers to 39.5 years [1]. This indicates a maturing gamer demographic, suggesting that gaming is expanding beyond traditional younger demographics.
The German gaming market experienced a brief dip but has since rebounded, with a 4% growth in turnover in the first half of 2025, reaching €4.6 billion. The growth is primarily driven by hardware sales, reflecting continued or increasing engagement in gaming overall [1][2].
The survey results indicate a growing interest in video and computer games among the German population. Fifty-eight percent of gamers play less than two hours a day, while seven percent play more than five hours daily [4]. In a recent survey, 45% of gamers in Germany stated they cannot imagine life without video and computer games [4]. Moreover, 28% of gamers prefer to play online with others [4].
The Bitkom association, the digital association for Germany, reported that in 2023, only 39% of gamers held the same view, compared to a previous year [1]. This suggests a growing acceptance and normalisation of gaming in German society. Compared to the long-term average, the proportion of gamers has increased, from 42% in 2015 [1].
Every fifth person in Germany has dreamed of a video game, according to Bernhard Rohleder, CEO of Bitkom [1]. The growing popularity of video games in Germany is consistent with the results of previous years, with 52% of respondents playing video or computer games at least occasionally [1][3]. As of 2025, more than half of all Germans play video or computer games at least occasionally, with one source specifying "more than two-thirds of people in Germany aged 16 and over" engage in digital gaming [1][4].
