Gaming in Germany: A Growing Trend and Nuanced Perspective

According to a survey conducted by the Bitkom digital industry association in Germany, gaming has become a widespread activity among a diverse demographic. The survey, which was carried out in Berlin from mid-May to early June, included 1,209 individuals aged 16 and above, with 626 of them identifying as gamers.

The survey found that 52% of the respondents play video or computer games at least occasionally. However, the duration or frequency of gaming among the respondents was not specified.

Bernhard Rohleder, CEO of Bitkom, commented on the survey findings, stating that one in five gamers has already dreamed of a video game. He also reported that in 2023, 39% of gamers could not imagine a life without gaming, which is an increase from previous years.

The survey also revealed public opinions on gaming related to war games and their influence. 34% of respondents believed such games might inspire military enlistment, 43% thought they highlighted war atrocities, and 50% expressed concern about desensitization to war. Interestingly, 43% support the German Bundeswehr developing its own training games, and 38% agree that gaming could be used for recruitment purposes.

The demographic details of the survey participants were not disclosed, but the findings suggest a balanced engagement across gender lines, with women playing about 20 minutes more per day on average than men.

The survey also found that 28 percent of gamers in Germany prefer to play online with others, while 7% play more than five hours a day. However, the survey did not provide further details about the duration or frequency of gaming among the respondents.

The importance of computer and video games continues to grow year by year, according to the survey. This trend reflects a nuanced view of gaming in German society, where gaming is not only a popular leisure activity but also considered in contexts of skills transfer and military use.
