Libby has altered its hold system, leading to dissatisfaction among certain users
In an effort to streamline digital lending processes for libraries and their patrons, Libby, an app for e-books and audiobooks from local libraries, has recently updated its hold system.
The new system ensures readers only receive titles when they're ready, and moves copies more efficiently through wait lists, reducing unclaimed holds and shortening wait times for everyone. This change is in response to feedback from librarians about long wait times, budget constraints, and unclaimed holds.
Overdrive, Libby's parent company, claims the new system creates a fairer and more efficient experience for both libraries and readers. Unsuspending a hold reactivates it and places the user back in line to receive the book when a copy is available. Users must manually unsuspend suspended holds within 365 days of their suspension, as suspended holds will lapse after this period.
Previously, Libby allowed users to delay holds for delivery between 7 and 180 days. However, with the new system, users can no longer advance in the waitlist once a hold is suspended. If they reach the first position, they will receive the next available copy once the hold is unsuspended.
To unsuspend a hold, users must click 'unsuspend hold' on the book of their choice. Users can find their suspended holds in the hold list on the Libby app. It's important to note that unsuspending a hold will restart the wait time, as the user will be placed back in line for the book.
The background of the update to Libby's locking system is to enhance security, improve user experience, and streamline digital lending processes for libraries and their patrons. Libby has already implemented this change, and users are encouraged to check their suspended holds and unsuspend them if necessary to keep their place in line for the books they've requested.
