In a groundbreaking development, the Thai police have successfully used artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in the investigation of a hit-and-run incident that occurred in Udon Thani province on July 6. The accident resulted in two fatalities, but thanks to the innovative use of technology, the driver was eventually apprehended.

A small part from the suspect's vehicle was found at the scene, which investigators sent to the Kumphawapi police station for examination. To identify the part and the Toyota model it belonged to, the police turned to ChatGPT, an AI tool. After analysing a photo of the auto part, ChatGPT identified it as a "front bumper upper reinforcement" with the part number 52113-0K140. This led investigators to conclude that the part likely came from a Toyota Hilux Vigo Champ, specifically from model years 2011–2015, possibly a minor change version.

This specific piece of information helped investigators narrow down their search and focus on locating the actual vehicle. They then reviewed security camera footage in the area to match the identified model with potential suspects, ultimately leading to the successful apprehension of the driver.

The details of the apprehension were shared on the Dom sirichai Facebook page, where the public praised the police for their innovative approach to the investigation. The investigation is ongoing, focusing on Toyota Hilux Vigo Champ vehicles from the specified model years and potential minor change versions.

It is worth noting that this is the first time AI has been used in such a capacity by the Thai police, adding a new dimension to their investigation methods. The use of AI not only helped in identifying the vehicle but also expedited the investigation process, making it more efficient and effective.

As the investigation continues, the police are likely to use the identified information to narrow down suspects and vehicles of interest in the hit-and-run case. The successful apprehension of the driver marks a significant development in the case and serves as a testament to the power of technology in modern policing.

In this instance, the Thai police utilized artificial-intelligence (AI) by employing ChatGPT, an AI tool, to analyze an auto part found at the crime scene, leading to the identification of a Toyota Hilux Vigo Champ. This detection happened to be a crucial step in the general-news case of the hit-and-run incident, as it aided in the narrowing down of suspects and vehicles of interest for crime-and-justice investigations.
