Kobo e-readers are no longer receiving support from Pocket moving forward

In a move to address the loss of the Pocket service, which was discontinued by Mozilla in June 2025, Rakuten Kobo has announced that it will be integrating Instapaper as a replacement on its e-readers. The new read-it-later integration is set to launch by the end of summer 2025.

The choice of Instapaper, a well-known service launched in 2008, is based on its clean, distraction-free reading interface and strong organizational tools. Kobo and Instapaper are currently working closely to ensure a smooth integration of the service.

The transition aims to provide a seamless experience for Kobo users, enabling them to continue reading web articles on their e-readers without interruption. Users who previously used Pocket can easily import their saved articles into Instapaper and start using the new integration once it goes live.

Michael Kozlowski, an independent writer based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, has been providing insights and analysis about the e-reader and e-book industry for the past eighteen years. His writings, which are not affiliated with any of the major companies in the industry, offer valuable perspectives on the latest developments in the field.

Interestingly, Pocket was a major selling point for people considering switching to Kobo, making the company unique in the e-reader space. However, Kobo is primarily a company that sells e-readers and e-books, not a software company, so the development of a replacement for Pocket was not within their usual scope.

Despite this, Kobo CEO Michael Tamblyn teased on his personal social media accounts that they were looking for a replacement for Pocket. However, it appears that as of now, Rakuten Kobo does not have a replacement for Pocket, with the Instapaper integration being the only solution in the pipeline.

Many Kobo users are up in arms, begging for a replacement for Pocket. However, Michael Kozlowski, who is not employed by Kobo or Rakuten, has not been involved in the development of a replacement for Pocket by Kobo.

In the meantime, Kobo users can access Michael Kozlowski's writings through various platforms such as email, social media, and websites. His writings offer valuable insights into the audiobook, e-book, and e-reader industry, making him a valuable resource for those interested in these fields.
