Kia Manufactures Car Accessory Material from Ocean Plastic Collected from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Kia Corporation, in a significant stride towards sustainable mobility, has unveiled a limited-edition trunk liner for the all-new Kia EV3. Made using reclaimed ocean plastic, this accessory marks the first genuine Kia accessory to be produced using materials sourced from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, in partnership with The Ocean Cleanup.
The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing and scaling technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic, considers Kia a passionate partner in ensuring that the plastic extracted from the ocean is given a new life in sustainable items.
This partnership is a key part of Kia's transformation into a provider of sustainable mobility solutions. Boyan Slat, Founder & CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, expressed gratitude for Kia's visionary and passionate partnership.
The launch of the limited-edition trunk liner is seen by The Ocean Cleanup as the first of many ways to turn ocean plastic from trash to treasure. The accessory will be available to order in line with the model's market introduction, and will be available in selected markets.
Kia's partnership with The Ocean Cleanup extends beyond this accessory. The corporation has also supported the deployment of The Ocean Cleanup’s floating trash capture systems in Guatemala’s Motagua and Las Vacas rivers, preventing about 20,000 tons of plastic waste annually from reaching the ocean.
Moreover, Kia has committed to incorporating recycled ocean plastics recovered through The Ocean Cleanup’s operations into the production of Kia electric vehicles. By 2030, the company aims that 20% of all plastics used in Kia vehicles will come from recycled materials, supporting circular economy practices in the automotive industry.
The partnership is a worldwide movement to create a cleaner, healthier oceans for future generations. It is a commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. The recycling and product development process of the limited-edition trunk liner has provided valuable lessons for future manufacturing of sustainable items.
The limited-edition trunk liner for the Kia EV3 remains one of the most significant outcomes of the partnership so far. As Kia continues to develop sustainable mobility solutions with The Ocean Cleanup, we can look forward to more innovative and eco-friendly products in the future.
