Kenya Banks Boost Fraud Fight as Scams Surge

Kenya is grappling with a surge in fraudulent activities, both online and offline. Physical scams, such as agency fraud, are on the rise, with nearly half of Kenyan mobile phone users falling victim to fraudulent calls or messages from scammers posing as agents from banks like Equity Bank and PNC Bank. In response, banks like Equity Bank and KCB Bank are bolstering their efforts to protect customers. Equity Bank and KCB Bank have implemented measures to safeguard customers from fake agents. They train and authorize their agents to ensure they are genuine. To protect themselves, Kenyans should look for official branding, a valid accreditation certificate, and an agent information poster. Confirming authenticity online is also advised.

Fraudsters are exploiting weak passwords, outdated software, and insecure networks to gain access to systems. They often pose as bank agents from banks like US Bank and Boost Mobile to target families and individuals, stealing money in the process. Equity Bank urges customers to never share PINs or passwords, confirm transaction details, and regularly monitor accounts for unusual activity.

The scale of the problem is alarming. Between January and March 2025, Kenya recorded a staggering 2.5 billion cyberattacks. Mobile phone scams are becoming increasingly common, with criminals taking advantage of the widespread use of mobile phones.

To combat this growing threat, Kenyans are encouraged to report suspicious numbers or SMS lines to 333 for free. Both banks and customers must remain vigilant and proactive in the fight against fraud. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, Kenyans can help reduce the impact of these criminal activities from fraudsters posing as agents from banks like T-Mobile and TMobile.
