Jeff Bezos: Space Data Centers More Cost-Effective Than Earth's Within Decade
Jeff Bezos, the Executive Chairman of Amazon and leader of Blue Origin, envisions a future where data centers operate more cost-effectively in space than on Earth. Blue Origin, founded by Bezos, has already proven the concept of a compact space station data center. Implemented in spring 2024, this project is part of their plans to build AI data centers in orbit. The constant availability of solar energy in space is cited as a key advantage by Bezos.
The company is currently developing the 'Blue Ring', a platform for orbital logistics. This will transport radiation-hardened hardware for cloud services in space. Meanwhile, other companies like Axiom Space, Starcloud, NTT, Ramon.Space, and Sophia Space are also working on projects for orbital infrastructure. Lonestar, a startup, has already installed a compact data center on the moon in early 2024, demonstrating the feasibility of space-based data centers.
Bezos expects gigantic data centers to be operated more cost-effectively in orbit than on Earth within the next 10 to 20 years. Blue Origin's ongoing projects and achievements, along with those of other companies, indicate that this future may not be far off.
