Apple's Sports app is making waves in the world of sports technology, announcing its expansion to eight European countries: Spain, Portugal, Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, and Italy.

The update brings a host of new features, including the "My Teams" feature, which allows users to view information for their selected teams, and the "My Leagues" tool, where users can handpick any league they'd like to keep up with. This includes popular leagues like the NFL, Top 25, and newly added second-tier European divisions such as 2. Bundesliga, Ligue 2, Segunda División, Serie B, and Primeira Liga.

Craig Mahonchak, Head of Product for Sports at Apple, expressed his excitement about the "My Teams" widget, stating it's one of his favorites. The new widgets provide scores, game schedules, and information on previous games, all in an expandable view that offers an on-the-spot snapshot of scores, past and upcoming games, and other details.

Users can also preschedule updates from the Live Activities feature for events like games later in the week. This means you can arrange to keep up with scores on your iPhone's lock screen, Apple Watch, or in the Dynamic Island display.

For a more personalized user experience, Apple has ensured that the new widgets can be used without opening the Apple Sports app. Tapping on a game within the widget will take you to the game card within the Apple Sports app.

Craig Mahonchak emphasized Apple's commitment to a personalized user experience. He mentioned that the new widgets will prioritize displaying the most current, important details first, such as live games for teams you're following.

The Apple Sports app, launched in February 2024, is now receiving updates that include widgets for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The app initially supported American sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) and motorsports (Formula 1, Nascar). With this latest update, it now includes national leagues like the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga in Germany and Austria, Ligue 1 in France, Serie A in Italy, La Liga in Spain, and international competitions including the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

The app is now available in Iceland, Ireland, and Portugal, among the eight new countries where the app launched, but specific leagues for these are not detailed at this time.

In a world where staying informed about sports is crucial, Apple's Sports app is making strides to ensure users have the necessary tools to stay up-to-date with their favourite teams and leagues.
