Introducing the Return of GPT-4 for Paid Users: why users are opting for GPT-4 over GPT-5

In a significant leap forward for artificial intelligence, OpenAI has introduced its latest model, GPT-5, offering improved performance, safer user interactions, and increased accessibility.

Capabilities and Performance

GPT-5 significantly improves upon its predecessor, GPT-4o, in terms of deep reasoning and coding accuracy. It reduces factual errors by up to 80% and excels in math, coding, and multimodal tasks. In benchmark tests like MMOU and VideoMMMU, GPT-5 achieved higher scores, making it superior for analyzing charts, UI mockups, or video summaries [1][2].

While GPT-4o excels in voice-first experiences, including real-time audio interaction, GPT-5 is better at handling visual and video-based tasks. GPT-5 is designed to replace most of the previous OpenAI models, offering streamlined variants like "general" and "thinking" modes. GPT-4o remains available for specific use cases, such as audio interactions [4].

User Interaction and Safety

GPT-5 introduces "safe completions," which provide bounded answers to risky prompts instead of full refusals, reducing the hallucination rate and deceptive responses compared to GPT-4o [3]. Initially, GPT-5 is perceived as more formal and distant compared to GPT-4o, which is often described as more emotionally engaging and sycophantic. OpenAI is working to add a warmer personality to GPT-5 [5].

Pricing and Accessibility

GPT-5 is priced at half the input cost of GPT-4o, maintaining the same output pricing. This makes it more cost-effective for users engaging in complex tasks. Free users now have access to a GPT-5 mini version, which offers basic high-quality reasoning capabilities [3].

Transition to GPT-5

The transition to GPT-5 caused some backlash from users who were accustomed to the older models. However, OpenAI has made GPT-4o available as an option for ChatGPT Plus users. ChatGPT itself suggests taking a break if interacted with for too long [6].

The "o" in GPT-4o and GPT-5

The "o" in GPT-4o stands for "omni," signifying its omnipotent capabilities. Similarly, the "o" in GPT-5 remains, symbolising the model's continuous evolution and advancement [7].

Some users prefer GPT-4o because they find it more personable compared to GPT-5. ChatGPT will automatically choose the best GPT-5 model to respond to a query, but users can also manually select options like "Think Longer" and "Deep Research" [8].

GPT-5 is the latest model from OpenAI, announced and rolled out globally on August 7 [9]. With its improved capabilities, safer user interactions, and increased accessibility, GPT-5 is set to redefine the landscape of artificial intelligence.
