In a significant step towards sustainable urban transport, Sono Group N.V., a leading solar technology company, has partnered with Stadtwerke Hof to equip a bus in the HofBus fleet with its Solar Bus Kit. This innovative solar retrofit solution aims to extend range, reduce fuel costs, and lessen the impact of CO2 emissions, promoting climate-friendly mobility.
The solar-assisted bus, which received road approval from the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV), is the first of its kind on German roads. It is equipped with 16 semi-flexible photovoltaic panels, totaling approximately 1.4 kWp of installed power. The installation was carried out in collaboration with ÖPNV-Service Hagen.

The efficiency gains include a significant reduction in energy consumption per distance traveled when switching from diesel to battery-electric buses supplemented by solar power. Battery-electric buses can use about 75% less energy per mile while being 4.2 times more energy efficient than diesel buses.
Besides emissions reductions, solar retrofit solutions contribute to cleaner air and improved public health by reducing smog-forming pollutants common to combustion engine buses. The project likely contributes to reduced operational costs and increased energy security by lowering reliance on diesel and grid electricity from carbon-intensive sources.
