Industrial Electronic Power Sought for India's Aim of Electrifying a $500 Billion Manufacturing Sector via ICEA
The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has unveiled a strategic plan aimed at bolstering the industrial and infrastructure electronics sectors, with the ambitious goal of helping India become a global hub for design and manufacturing in these critical areas by 2030-31.
According to ICEA, the future electronics industry should not only focus on manufacturing end products, but also on goods that are essential for automating factories, cities, and transportation networks. This industrial electronics segment is considered the "brain and nervous system" of advanced manufacturing setups and is crucial for achieving real manufacturing leadership in India.
Key elements of ICEA’s strategic plan include:
- Recognition of industrial electronics as a national strategic priority: ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo believes that creating leadership in industrial automation is vital for advanced manufacturing, and has identified industrial electronics as a key area for focus.
- Development of embedded systems, automation software, robotics, and AI-integrated systems: ICEA considers these areas as having high potential for skilled employment and technological advancement.
- Crafting a dedicated policy and strategic roadmap: ICEA is actively working on this via its “Steering Committee on Industrial Electronics,” which includes top executives from Delta Electronics, Infineon Technologies, Festo, Fanuc, Rockwell Automation India, Feedback Advisory, and the Federation for Economic Development (FED).
- Supporting automation across factories, smart cities, and transportation infrastructure: This focus is expected to drive productivity and innovation critical for hitting the USD 500 billion target.
Manish Walia, Vice President at Delta Electronics, considers industrial electronics as the technological backbone for various sectors, including smart factories, intelligent grids, and automated transport networks. Jasbir Singh, Executive Chairman and CEO of Amber Group, believes that this recent transaction will bolster India's industrial automation ecosystem and expedite the country's transition towards smart, digitally-driven production systems, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
The strategic plan also aims to address challenges around technology access, regulation, and ecosystem development. ICEA continues to support industry-led initiatives aimed at boosting innovation, global competitiveness, and India's position in the global electronics value chain.
