Hype's Up at Kiel Week - Police Vigilance and Strict Security Measures

Enhanced Police Presence and Routine Arms Searches during Kiel Week - Increased Police Presence and Stricter Weapons Regulation During Kieler Week

Gear up for a safer, more enjoyable experience at this summer's Kiel Week (21st to 29th June)! With a boosted police presence and rigorous security measures in place, your peace of mind is their priority.

Christian Hasler, head of police management at the police headquarters, declared, "We're ramping up visible police presence even more to boost the security feelings of our attendees." Despite maintaining abstract threat levels, the authorities take security seriously.

During the ten-day event, the police will focus on carrying out strict knife checks, as bladed weapons are prohibited on the event grounds. Addressing the concern, Hasler states, "We're bolstering these checks significantly." Inspections may also take place on connecting paths between various areas. "The message is crystal-clear: Leave your knives at home—we don't want any."

Generally, Kiel Week is a peaceful event, but crimes like thefts, bodily injuries, robberies, and sexual offenses do occur. Fret not, though; officers will be patrolling with a "white cap," not armed to the teeth.

Security Barriers

Working hand-in-hand with the police, the city has revamped its safety concept. Roving and permanent barriers, bollards, and barriers will be installed at critical points to keep unauthorized or accidental vehicle entry out of the event areas. Important escape and rescue routes, however, remain open and will be staffed by security teams. The city invested around 60,000 euros in installing eight new access barriers for this purpose.

In a nod to crowd management, police will again employ a drone to direct visitor flows along the Kiellinie, the heavily trafficked waterfront. One-way street regulations will also help distribute the crowd. These tactics, proven successful in the past according to Hasler, help ensure smooth event operations.

To provide an overview of the event areas’ current crowd situation, live video broadcasts will be streamed from select city center locations during the last week of June. These feeds will help deployment forces monitor movement and crowding levels, quickly identify potential hazards, and coordinate mobile deployment and rescue teams efficiently.
