Increased Use of Electric Vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt - Increased Adoption of Electric Vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt

Surging Electric Vehicles in Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt has witnessed a growing number of electric vehicles (EVs) amidst a relatively modest overall total, as per the State Statistical Office. As of January 1, 2025, EVs constituted 1.6% of all registered passenger cars in the state, amounting to 19,343 solely electric-powered vehicles. The latest count represented a 17.9% surge in comparison to the previous year.

This increase brought the total motor vehicle tally in Saxony-Anhalt to 1,521,611 vehicles, signaling a 5.1% growth over the previous year's figures. The state still predominantly hosts gasoline and diesel vehicles, with approximately 797,000 and 329,000 vehicles, respectively.

Female representation showed a higher presence in passenger car registrations, accounting for 37.7% of the total, while motorcycles registered to women accounted for a much smaller 11.8% share.

The booming electric mobility industry in Germany, marked by significant investments in EVs and charging infrastructure, may be a contributing factor. Germany ranked atop Europe in EV registrations, with over 1.65 million all-electric vehicles by the end of 2024[1]. Moreover, there were nearly 160,000 charging stations available across the country[1]. Despite a stagnation in EV sales across Europe in 2024, there was a 23% growth in the first quarter of 2025[2].

Saxony-Anhalt demonstrated some interest in electric vehicle technology, with Mercedes-Benz Trucks planning to set a Guinness World Record using the eActros 600, an all-electric long-haul truck[4]. However, detailed local data on vehicle registrations or gender distribution was not readily available.

In an effort to capitalize on the surging electric vehicles (EVs) trend nationwide, Saxony-Anhalt might consider implementing a community policy that includes vocational training programs focused on electric vehicle technology to meet the growing demand for skilled technicians. This could contribute to a more sustainable and self-sufficient EV ecosystem within the state.

To promote the development of the electric mobility sector in Saxony-Anhalt, it would be prudent to invest in advanced technologies and infrastructure, such as vocational training facilities, to foster a skilled workforce and support the continued growth of EV adoption.
