Top American-Made Vehicles of 2025 Dominated by Tesla and Honda

In the latest Cars.com's American-Made Index, Tesla and Honda are leading the pack with the Model 3 taking the number one spot and Tesla holding the top four positions overall. The Honda Passport is ranked ninth, and Honda has more vehicles in the top 20 than any other brand [1][3][5].

The index evaluated around 400 vehicles built and bought in the U.S., ranking 99 qualifying models based on criteria established since 2020 [1]. Tesla's dominance reflects its strong American manufacturing footprint, consistently recognized in recent years [5].

The 2025 Index takes on particular importance due to the tariffs ordered by President Donald Trump. Ongoing trade tensions, especially between the U.S. and China, have led to high reciprocal tariffs on goods, including automotive parts and materials. For example, tariffs have escalated to peaks of 145% by the U.S. and 125% by China on certain goods, though some negotiations have moderated these levels recently [2]. Such tariffs increase costs for automakers, affecting the price of vehicles and car insurance premiums, as higher parts costs translate into higher consumer costs [4].

The index focuses on evaluating factors such as U.S. factory jobs, manufacturing locations, and parts sourcing. However, it does not factor in the country of origin for parts such as door handles, tires, and interior materials [6]. Michigan has the most car assembly plants in the U.S. [7].

Other notable mentions in the index include the Kia EV6 ranked sixth, the Jeep Gladiator pickup truck ranked fifth, the Tesla Model X ranked fourth, the Tesla Model S ranked third, and the Subaru Crosstrek just above the Nissan Rogue [1][3].

Hyundai recently opened a major manufacturing facility in Georgia. The Honda Ridgeline is ranked seventh, the Honda Odyssey eighth, the Nissan Rogue just above the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and the Volkswagen ID.4 is ranked tenth in the index [1][3].

In a difficult market created by the tariffs, many dealers find themselves in a challenging position between making a profit and increasing sales volumes. Cars.com's principal analyst, David Greene, advises price-conscious car consumers to buy now to avoid potential price increases [8]. When asked what dealers can do to help their customers through the tariff issue, Greene advises transparency [9].

Andrew Wright, managing partner for Pennsylvania-based Vinart Dealerships, refers to a book by then-real estate developer Donald Trump, "The Art of the Deal," to describe the impact of the president's aggressive tariff policy on the auto industry [10].

In summary, the tariff situation has created uncertainty in the American auto industry, increasing costs for automakers and consumers. However, the Cars.com American-Made Index continues to rank current-year vehicles that contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, providing consumers with a guide to support their purchasing decisions.

In today's tech-driven landscape, the increasing costs and supply bottlenecks due to high reciprocal tariffs and rare-earth export restrictions might affect the automotive industry's use of technology, potentially altering the manufacturing and design of future vehicles. As people embrace a more tech-focused lifestyle with electric cars gaining popularity, the integration of advanced technology in vehicles could become crucial, providing a competitive edge for manufacturers like Tesla.
