Hundreds of Cambodian Garment Workers Fight for Unpaid Severance After Covid-19 Layoffs

Hundreds of workers at Hulu Garment Factory in Cambodia have been left jobless and without severance pay after being temporarily laid off during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Workers Rights Consortium and Pay Your Workers campaign have stepped in to support the workers' cause.

The union representing the workers, INTUFE, has been advocating for the workers' rights. They previously asked Adidas, a major client of the factory, to use funds from the Yeezy product line to settle the unpaid severance. Despite Adidas ending its contract with the factory in August 2020, accounting for only 5% of its production, the union believes the company has a responsibility to help its former suppliers' workers.

Adidas, however, rejects these allegations. The company maintains that it is not responsible for the payment of severance to the workers. The Workers' Rights Association estimates that 456 former Hulu workers are owed a total of $1.1 million in unpaid benefits. The Clean Clothes Campaign has also reached out to Adidas investors about the issue but has not received any committal responses.

The situation has left many former Hulu workers in debt, struggling to make ends meet without their income. Other brands that have been requested by the union to address the unpaid wages of Hulu workshop workers include Walmart, Amazon, Macy's, and LT Apparel.

The future remains uncertain for the former Hulu workers, who continue to fight for their rightful severance pay. The union and supporting organizations remain committed to their cause, urging Adidas and other brands to take responsibility and contribute to the settlement of the unpaid wages.
