Hotel Barcelona's AI Content to be Replaced After Mixed Reception
Hotel Barcelona, a 2.5D action roguelite game, has received a mixed reception on Steam, with a 56% user rating and critical reviews reflecting similar sentiments. The game, a collaboration between Suda51 and Swery, has been criticized for its use of AI-generated content. CULT Games, the publisher, has announced plans to replace this AI content with human-made content in an upcoming patch.
The AI-generated elements in Hotel Barcelona, including voice overs and images in in-game VHS tapes, were created by White Owls Inc., specifically by the developer team led by Swery. However, CULT Games has expressed concerns about the use of such AI. They oppose AI that has a disproportionate environmental impact, takes work away from real people, or is trained on unethical datasets. In response, they are working to replace the AI-generated content with fully human-made content in a future patch.
The upcoming patch for Hotel Barcelona will remove the AI-generated content, addressing the concerns of both users and the publisher. This change reflects CULT Games' commitment to ethical AI use and supporting real people in the creative process.
