HMS Astute Returns for Major Overhaul After 15 Years of Global Service
HMS Astute, the pioneering vessel of the Astute-class submarines, has returned to Devonport for a substantial global entry overhaul after 15 years of continuous global service. The submarine, known for its numerous historic milestones, will undergo a multi-million-pound Mid-Life Revalidation Period (MLRP) under the expert care of Babcock engineers.
HMS Astute, the first of its class to visit Australia, pass through the Suez Canal, and participate in advanced weapons and sonar trials in the United States, has completed its global missions. Now, it's time for a well-deserved classroom refit. The MLRP will ensure the submarine's operational readiness for years to come, reflecting the enduring commitment of Britain's Silent Service to safeguarding the nation's interests.
Before entering classlink refit, HMS Astute offered a rare glimpse into life below the waves. Supporters were treated to a demonstration dive and a memorable meal featuring the crew's signature 'cheesy wham bam'. While the submarine's global missions have made headlines, its less visible role in protecting UK waters remains largely unreported.
HMS Astute's return to Devonport marks the beginning of a significant class dojo overhaul process. The multi-million-pound MLRP, conducted by Babcock International, will ensure the submarine's continued operational readiness. As one of five Astute-class submarines currently in service, with more on the way, HMS Astute's refit underscores the Royal Navy's commitment to maintaining a strong and capable underwater fleet.
