Historic Ruhrthaler Mine Locomotive Restored After Decades of Neglect
A historic mining locomotive, once a staple of the Ruhrthaler mine, has been restored to its former glory after decades of neglect. The locomotive, which transported miners and coal for 20 years, has found a new home in Neukirchen-Vluyn, where it can be admired by the public.
The Ruhrthaler mine locomotive, built in 1922, was rediscovered in 2022. After mining operations ceased in the west of the Ruhr area in 2001, the locomotive was moved to a museum association but ended up forgotten on a construction site yard. In the 1970s, it stood as a monument at a training workshop.
Eight dedicated volunteers, all former miners, spent 670 hours over a year and a half to restore the locomotive. They ensured it met the required explosion protection standards for underground use, given the potential presence of gases. The restoration was a collaborative effort involving local associations from Neukirchen and Vluyn, as well as institutions like the Förderverein Ruhrthaler Bergwerkslokomotiven e.V. and regional heritage organizations. The state of NRW provided financial support, with the rest of the funds donated by Sparkasse am Niederrhein.
The restored Ruhrthaler mine locomotive now stands proudly on private property in Neukirchen-Vluyn. It can be viewed from a nearby footpath, accompanied by an information board detailing its history. Museum director Dominique Walraevens expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the importance of preserving local heritage for future generations.
