Highlander's Underwater Server Pod Near Shanghai to Launch in Late 2025
Highlander, a tech company, is constructing an underwater server pod near Shanghai. The project aims to reduce power consumption by utilising ocean water for cooling. The first clients will be state-owned institutions like China Telecom.
The pod is scheduled to be submerged in October 2025. Highlander has overcome challenges such as protecting systems from salt water corrosion. An independent assessment confirmed that temperature changes from the project are within acceptable limits.
Highlander aims to source 95% of its energy requirements from renewable sources. Using ocean water for cooling can reduce cooling energy consumption by around 90%. This project follows Microsoft's similar experiment concluded in 2024, and China's ongoing project in Hainan started in 2023. Experts, however, express concerns about potential thermal pollution as data centers expand and increase heat output.
Highlander's underwater server pod near Shanghai is set to launch in late 2025. It promises significant energy savings through ocean water cooling. The project's success could pave the way for more sustainable data center solutions, despite concerns about thermal pollution.
