HBO Max to Air Documentary Series on Notorious Hacker Julius Kivimäki
Finnish hacker Julius Kivimäki, known for his involvement in high-profile cybercrimes, is the subject of a new documentary series on HBO Max. The series, directed by Sami Kieski and co-written by Joni Soila, will air weekly in September and features interviews with the hacker himself.
Kivimäki's criminal history dates back to his early teens when he was involved in mass-compromising websites for payment card data and 'swatting'. In 2014, he gained notoriety as part of the Lizard Squad, launching a DDoS attack against Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox Live platforms. The same year, he was responsible for a bomb threat against former Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley, grounding an American Airlines plane.
In 2020, Kivimäki targeted Vastaamo Psychotherapy Center, leaking patient records and extorting patients. Despite being convicted of over 50,000 cybercrimes in 2015, he received a lenient sentence due to his age. However, in 2023, he was arrested in France and sentenced to over six years in prison in 2024. Kivimäki is currently incarcerated in Finland.
The upcoming HBO Max documentary series promises to delve into the mind of one of the most notorious hackers of recent times. It will explore Kivimäki's motivations, methods, and the impact of his actions on his victims. The series is set to provide a fascinating insight into the world of cybercrime.
