H2U Technologies Appoints Liviu Cosacescu as Vice President of Engineering

H2U Technologies, a California-based developer of low-cost, iridium-free proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, has announced the appointment of Liviu Cosacescu as Vice President of Engineering. This strategic move is part of H2U Technologies' mission to provide sustainable, affordable solutions for green hydrogen production.

Cosacescu, with over 30 years of experience in fuel cell and electrolyzer research, development, and manufacturing, brings a wealth of knowledge to H2U Technologies. He holds a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Craiova, Romania, and has worked with major automakers and suppliers, including Ballard Power Systems, AFCC for Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Honda, and Nissan Motor Companies.

In his previous role, Cosacescu assessed electrolyzer supplier technologies and manufacturing methods at ZEV Station. Now, he will oversee the ongoing development of H2U's electrolyzer products.

H2U Technologies' world-class technology stems from ten years of research and development at Caltech, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The company leverages its Catalyst Discovery Engine™ (CDE™) capabilities to develop novel catalysts for use in its electrolyzer systems, which are particularly suited for pairing with renewable energy sources.

The appointment of Cosacescu is significant as H2U Technologies' innovation lies in developing a low-cost, iridium-free PEM electrolyzer. This breakthrough eliminates the need for scarce and expensive iridium catalysts traditionally required in PEM electrolyzers, enabling the production of green hydrogen at a significantly reduced cost by using more abundant and less costly materials.

The impact on the hydrogen production industry is substantial. By removing the dependency on iridium, H2U Technologies' electrolyzers can be manufactured at scale more affordably, accelerating the deployment of green hydrogen solutions for energy storage, transportation, and industrial uses. This advancement promotes wider adoption of clean hydrogen technologies, making green hydrogen more competitive with fossil fuels and supporting decarbonization goals globally.

Mark McGough, CEO of H2U Technologies, believes Cosacescu's experience will be valuable in bringing low-cost electrolyzers to market. Cosacescu himself is excited to lead H2U's engineering team to advance the commercialization of low-cost, iridium-free electrolyzers.

H2U Technologies can be found on their official website (h2utechnologies.com) and on LinkedIn and Twitter. The appointment of Cosacescu as VP of Engineering was announced on May 2, 2023.
