Government of Sheinbaum unveils blueprint for two electric vehicle models; proposed design center to be situated in Puebla within the Olinia project

The Mexican government, under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, is spearheading the development of the Olinia electric vehicles. These vehicles aim to provide affordable and emission-free mobility solutions to all Mexicans.

The Olinia Project, a national design project promoting electromobility, is currently working on the first two models of an electric car. One model is designed for neighborhood mobility, while the other is intended for commercial delivery, aiming to help accelerate the growth of small businesses.

The development of the Olinia electric vehicles includes software for control, communication, operation, and monitoring of the units. The National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) is responsible for the exterior and interior design, embedded systems, infrastructure and equipment catalog, vehicle charger, and integral quality management system for these vehicles.

The electric vehicles will be electric, light, and capable of climbing hills. They are designed to offer practical intelligence, adaptability, efficient energy use, freedom of movement, and the flight of innovation, symbolised by the 'alebrije' rabbit, the emblem of the Mexican mini-electric vehicle manufacturer Olinia.

Scientists from the IPN, the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and Public Centers of the Secihti are participating in the Olinia Project.

The Olinia electric cars will be charged in any conventional outlet, making them accessible and convenient for charging. The operating cost of these vehicles is expected to be lower than that of any conventional gasoline car, even a motorcycle, making them an attractive option for many.

The first two electric vehicles will be revealed in September of this year, and they are expected to be developed by mid-2026. The IPN will offer a specialty in hybrid and electric vehicles starting on August 18, furthering the development and understanding of these innovative vehicles.

The passenger transport vehicle is an alternative to mototaxis, offering greater comfort and space. The commercial use vehicle for delivery is intended to help small businesses grow and thrive in a sustainable manner.

The Olinia Project is a significant step towards promoting electromobility in Mexico, offering affordable and emission-free mobility solutions to the general public. Further detailed specifications may be released officially in the future or found in more specialized sources. Stay tuned for more updates on the Olinia Project and the development of these innovative electric vehicles.

The National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) is contributing to the government's technology sector, as they are responsible for the exterior and interior design, embedded systems, infrastructure and equipment catalog, vehicle charger, and integral quality management system for the Olinia electric vehicles.

Scientists from several institutions, including the IPN, TecNM, UNAM, and Public Centers of the Secihti, are working together on the Olinia Project, which aligns with the government's focus on technology and innovation.
