Google Maps Error Causes False Road Closures During Ascension Day Weekend

Over the extended Ascension Day weekend, a Google Maps error caused confusion and traffic congestion as highways in Germany were falsely displayed as closed. The glitch mainly affected major cities like Berlin, Hamburg, and Frankfurt am Main.

According to police in various regions, numerous highways, as shown in red dots on Google Maps, were not actually closed. Parts of the Netherlands and Belgium were also affected. The police confirmed that these closures did not exist, as reported by Bild newspaper.

The incident is currently being investigated internally by Google, with a spokesperson stating that the maps' data comes from various sources, including third-party providers, public sources, and user inputs. The maps are regularly updated, but the time taken varies, and users are invited to report errors or missing entries using the reporting tool provided.

Similar issues were reported earlier this month when supposedly closed highway tunnels in Thuringia were displayed on Google Maps. The police complaint led to the tunnels being shown as open again, and authorities have since recommended checking multiple sources before embarking on trips to avoid such situations.

While the cause of the error remains unclear, the holiday weekend, which traditionally sees an increase in traffic, may have exacerbated the problem. Drivers who utilized alternative navigation apps like Apple Maps or Waze, or who relied on radio traffic reports, found that roads were operating normally.

The incident highlights the importance of verifying traffic information from multiple sources, especially during holiday periods when more people are traveling. Google is investigating the incident and has been invited to comment on the matter.

The Commission has also been consulted on the issues surrounding the Google Maps error that occurred over the Ascension Day weekend, including the role of technology in the incident.

Drivers who turned to alternate navigation apps like Apple Maps or Waze during the error were able to avoid the confusion, demonstrating the significance of utilizing multiple sources for accurate traffic information, particularly during holiday periods.
