Google Enhances AI Coding Agent Jules with New Terminal Interface
Google has enhanced its AI coding agent, Jules, with a new terminal interface, opening up more integration options for developers. Jules, based on Gemini 2.5 Pro, has been freely available since August and now offers API access for system integration.
The new terminal interface enables developers to manage Jules tasks alongside their own terminal commands. They can start, stop, and verify tasks directly from the terminal. Additionally, environment variable management has been introduced, providing a structured way to grant Jules access to necessary variables.
Jules now boasts a memory function that remembers user preferences and applies them automatically to future tasks. It works in a cloud-based virtual machine, cloning repositories, installing dependencies, and creating automatic pull requests with audio summaries of changes. Furthermore, Jules can break down complex tasks into smaller steps, adapt to user instructions, and perform unit tests after linking with a GitHub account.
Google has also introduced a file selector feature, allowing specific files to be highlighted in the chat with Jules. Moreover, Jules can be triggered from bug reports in Slack, thanks to the new API access.
With these updates, Google aims to make Jules more accessible and useful for developers, integrating it seamlessly into their existing workflows. While Google controls the AI coding agent, a specific release date for public access is not yet officially announced.
