Gmail, Drive, and Docs Interface to Incorporate Gemini Gems Feature
Google Workspace users now have a new tool at their disposal: Custom Gems. These custom AI bots, available in the side panel of Workspace apps and the Gemini app, can help streamline your workflow and boost productivity.
## Creating Custom Gems
To create a custom Gem, you'll need to visit the dedicated creation page at `gemini.google.com/gems/create`. Alternatively, you can start the process directly within your Workspace app by clicking the "Create a new Gem" button in the Gemini side panel, which will redirect you to the creation page.
Once there, provide a name and description for your Gem, specify its purpose or persona (such as "Sales Assistant" or "Writing Editor"), and ground it with specific files or information relevant to your workflow. You can also write custom instructions to tailor its behavior for your specific needs. Once configured, save your custom Gem, and it will be available across your Workspace apps.
## Using Custom Gems in Workspace Apps
In Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, or Drive, look for the Gemini side panel. Open it to see the Gems section listing both pre-made and your custom Gems. Choose a Gem from the list—either a pre-made option like Writing Editor or Brainstormer, or your own custom Gem—and use it for a variety of tasks such as drafting content, generating ideas, or summarizing documents.
Type prompts or questions directly in the side panel, and Gems can help with tasks like creating content tailored to your audience, preparing sales pitches, or proofreading from a specific persona. Utilize Workspace features like @-mentioning files or folders, so your Gem can access relevant context from your Drive.
## Examples of Use Cases
- Copywriting: Use a custom copywriting Gem to generate content inside a Google Doc, tailored for your target audience. - Sales Assistance: Create a sales assistant Gem grounded with company or industry information, then use it while drafting emails in Gmail. - Content Review: Use a Gem to “pressure test” your writing from the perspective of a CEO or other persona to refine your message.
Google provides pre-made Gems like Writing Editor, Brainstormer, Learning Coach, and Coding Partner. However, the real utility of Gems comes from creating custom ones to complete specific tasks, goals, and workflows.
This feature is being rolled out to Workspace users over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for the new Gems section in your side panel. With Custom Gems, you can personalize your workflow and work smarter, not harder.
Technology powered by artificial-intelligence, Custom Gems, can now aid Google Workspace users in streamlining their workflows and enhancing productivity. In the Gemini side panel of Workspace apps, users can create, save, and use custom Gems, like a sales assistant or copywriting tool, to assist with various tasks such as drafting content, generating ideas, or proofreading. As Custom Gems are tailored to specific needs, they can pressure test writing from a CEO's perspective, refine messages, and even create content tailored to a target audience.
