GitOps Adoption Soars to 77%, Driving Better Software Delivery
A recent survey by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) reveals a significant increase in the adoption of GitOps principles. 77% of respondents now adhere to these practices, up from 53% in 2022. This shift is accompanied by improved software delivery metrics and enhanced security and compliance outcomes.
The survey found that while 90% of organizations use version control and human-readable formats for configurations, only 16% fully adhere to all assessed GitOps practices. Companies with mature GitOps practices perform better on DORA metrics, indicating faster change failure rates, shorter lead times, and more frequent deployments.
Argo CD is the most popular platform for GitOps, used by about 50% of companies, followed by Flux with 11%. Other platforms include Codefresh, GitLab, Harness, and Octopus Deploy. Most respondents agree that GitOps improves auditability (81%) and prevents drift (78%). Argo CD, with its full, opinionated platform and web interface, is becoming the preferred choice for launching new applications in cloud native ecosystems. Meanwhile, Flux, backed by Weaveworks until its closure last year, offers a more modular, command-line driven interface.
Codefresh, founded in 2014, specializes in CI/CD and DevOps tools. It operates an open-source project called Codefresh CI/CD Platform, offering a flexible and scalable solution for CI/CD pipelines. In recent years, Codefresh has also focused on the GitOps market, managing the configuration and deployment process through Git.
The growing adoption of GitOps principles and practices indicates a shift towards more automated, reliable, and secure software delivery. Argo CD leads the market, but competition from platforms like Codefresh, Flux, and others ensures continuous innovation. As GitOps expands beyond just Kubernetes, more organizations are expected to adopt and benefit from these practices.
