Germany's Battery Cell Research Factory Gets €820M Boost
The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space is investing up to 500 million euros to boost research facilities and projects. Meanwhile, the state of NRW is investing around 320 million euros in land purchases and buildings for the Battery Cell Research Factory (BCRF) in Munster, which is set to open by late 2027.
The BCRF, one of Germany's largest research projects, targets various industries including the automotive industry, energy sector, robotics, and medical technology. The first phase, BCRF Prefab, is already operational with over 140 employees of the Fraunhofer Society working there. It covers 6,000 square meters.
The second phase, BCRF Fab, is significantly larger, covering 20,000 square meters. It is set to be completed by the end of 2027. Munster was awarded the contract to set up and operate the battery cell research factory in 2019. However, the search results do not specify which institution is responsible for the construction of this second phase.
The BCRF, a key part of the research location 'BatteryCityMunster', is expected to significantly contribute to battery cell research and development, with substantial financial backing from the federal ministry and the state of NRW.
